TARGETING CIVILIANS The latest events in the Middle East present a new set of tactics in the conduct of warfare. The Hizbollah’s goal is not a military one. They are targeting Israel’s civilian population with the clear intention of killing as many civilians as possible in the short run, and - in the long run - to vaporize the State of Israel. This is the reason why the Hizbollah missiles are mostly fired during the daytime and not at night, when people generally sleep in reinforced shelters or rooms. This is also why the Hizbollah load their missiles with ball bearings, in order to maximize injuries and fatalities.
This war joins other infamous conflicts, where “targeting civilians” has been declared to be the main objective. While the IDF drops leaflets from the air, urging civilians in southern Lebanon to leave the war zone, the Hizbollah take pride in every Israeli civilian casualty. The Hizbollah openly declare that they are acting on behalf of Iran and Syria, and thereby serve Iran’s political goal of diverting world attention from its nuclear program.
And yet the world still refuses to recognize the danger that can be inflicted when a single terrorist gang goes to war against a sovereign nation, any nation. If this battle ends before the complete dismantling of Hizbollah as a terror organization, it will be a go-ahead signal to all the other terror organizations that it is possible to achieve political gain by holding sovereign nations to ransom.
